The Un-Finishing School

FINISHED BELLY

The ‘Unfinishing School’ in Sanchong City, a satellite province of Tapei, is part of a wider study on the theme of generating while preserving connectivity within a dense urban environment. The project is sited among three existing schools of very different character and coalesces the public and private realms simultaneously by establishing a structural manifold of conceptual and concrete boundaries. This manifold stimulates a greater connectivity emanating from within the schools and reaching out to the wider city.

The form of the school is derived through an analysis of pedestrian flux along the routes required to generate connectivity within the greater metropolis.

The unfinishing school is a playground for competition and collaboration between the schools and their students. It further provides amenities which seamlessly enhance the existing facilities for the public to enjoy.

Sensitive teaching spaces are lifted free of the ground plane giving free flow to pedestrian traffic over and through the site. An abundance of structural elements penetrate the ground connecting the subterranean to the elevated spaces and intentionally inhibits the disruptive informal construction which is prevalent with the general context. The ground plane is sculpted to maximise it’s surface area and increases pedestrian interaction with the public spaces within and below.

The support for the Un-finishing School is provided by an abundant forest of structural members, enabling further expansion of the upper levels whilst defending the new connection created at ground level from informal construction.

The Un-finishing School is arranged around an amphitheater that intersects all levels at  creates a forum for interaction between the public, traversing the ground plane, and three schools that compete in the spaces above.
