High(dro)-Rise is situated in the Taipei metropolis, the Capital of Taiwa and the project looks to reconnect the population with the neglected Tamsui river by instating regenerative and symbiotic industries along the waterfront.
High(dro)-Rise is a proposal for a regenerative masterplan on the banks of the Tamsui river in the heart of the Taipei metropolis. This urban intervention looks to reconnect SanChong City with the river, replacing crude and oppressive concrete walled flood defenses with a sponge like structure that traps and utilities excess water during the times of flood. By stepping into the river not only does High(dro)-Rise create extra space for residence and industry but also provides new recreational experiences for the residents of SanChong.

At the heart of High(dro)-Rise are a series of osmotic power plants which take advantage of the fresh river water and salty sea water that is available on the site, to provide a sustainable source of power for the existing city. The power plants trail semi permeable tubes into the river which draw freshwater into the system where it used to drive turbines before being poured through a sequences of evaporation pools, running from the highest points of High(dro)-Rise through to the lowest levels, to distill the salt out of the now brackish water.
As well as generating electricity, High(dro)-Rise looks to purify the polluted waters of the Tamsui river by introducing a series of aqua-culture industries, such as fish and seaweed farming, into the power production process. Different sequences of industry were reviewed for their impact upon one another and an optimal arrangement was established, creating a symbiosis between the different aqua-cultures. Each industry has a different volumetric and climatic requirement which is programmed into form of the distillation pools to ensure that each layer of industry is provided with optimal conditions in which to grow.
Within SanChong the streets are is a dense mix of industries at ground level with residential high rise above, though the changing nature of industry in Taipei has move focus away from these basement industries and placed a greater strain on the Taipei’s transport networks. High(dro)-Rise looks to create multiple ground levels, creating spaces of pedestrians, vehicles and industry throughout the layers of SanChong. By creating opportuinties for new industry, High(dro)-Rise looks to provide local work to SanChong and reduce the strain upon the already congested transport network
High(dro)-Rise is envisaged as a prototype for regenerating the boarders between the city and the river, growing in phases towards to the coast, expanding the threshold and strengthening the ties between the city and the river.
